Yuba College Chemistry Laboratory Rules
  1. All students must wear approved eye protection at all times in the laboratory. Students are advised not to wear contact lenses in the laboratory.
  2. Food, drink or smoking are not permitted in the laboratory. Visitors are not permitted in the laboratory at any time.
  3. Never touch or taste any chemical. Never touch any unauthorized items or equipment.
  4. Exercise care with chemicals and apparata at all times. If you are uncertain of the method or safety of a particular operation, substance or apparatus, ask your instructor before proceeding. Report all accidents and safety violations to the instructor or lab technician immediately.
  5. Each student is responsible for locating and knowing how to use lab safety equipment. If you have questions about these, ask your instructor.
  6. Never act in a disruptive or careless manner in the lab. The instructor and the lab technician have the right to dismiss from the lab, any student who is engaged in unsafe or unauthorized activity. Such dismissal will result in loss of credit for work performed.
  7. Always work under the ventilation hood with substances that might generate noxious or hazardous fumes.
  8. Never leave an ignited Bunsen burner unattended. Never turn on the fuel gas unnecessarily. Never add boiling chips to a solution that is warmer than room temperature.
  9. Dispose of chemicals only as directed by the instructor or lab technician.
  10. Never return chemicals to a reagent bottle. Never remove the reagent bottles from their original locations. Always bring an appropriate container for your sample to the reagent area, dispense your sample, and leave the bottle as you found it (clean, covered, etc.)
  11. Store all unnecessary items (coats, backpacks, etc.) at the approved location.
  12. Never work in the lab without the permission of the instructor who is on duty.
